Andhra Pradesh Approves Major pumped storage projects Expansions, Cancels Delayed Avuku Project
Jun 27, 2025
In a major push for renewable energy storage, the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, approved multiple large-scale pumped storage projects (PSPs) and a hybrid power project, while cancelling a long-stalled PSP. Among the approvals, three Adani Group projects received significant upgrades: the Gandikota PSP in YSR Kadapa district was increased from 1,000 MW to 1,800 MW, Peddakota PSP in Alluri Sitarama Raju district from 1,000 MW to 1,800 MW, and Raiwada PSP across Vizianagaram and Anakapalli districts from 600 MW to 900 MW.
Berry Alloys Ltd. also received approval for an 83 MW wind-solar hybrid project in Sri Sathya Sai district. Chinta Green Energy Pvt. Ltd. was cleared to develop a 360 MW PSP at Koppolu in YSR Kadapa district, expected to contribute to energy balancing and grid stability.
In a strong move to enforce project accountability, the Cabinet cancelled the 800 MW Avuku PSP in Nandyal district, previously awarded to Yarro Infra Pvt. Ltd., due to persistent delays, lack of a Detailed Project Report, and non-compliance. This decision underscores the state's commitment to timely execution and expansion of clean energy infrastructure.
