U.S. Solar Module Production Surpasses 50 GW, Strengthening Energy Independence

Feb 06, 2025

The U.S. solar manufacturing industry has achieved a historic milestone, with domestic solar module production capacity now exceeding 50 GW. This means that if all factories operate at full capacity, the country could fully meet its own solar demand, significantly reducing reliance on imports.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association’s Supply Chain Dashboard, the industry continues to expand, with 56 GW of new solar cell production, 24 GW of wafer production, and 13 GW of ingots in the pipeline. Additionally, solar tracker manufacturing has surpassed 80 GW, highlighting the growing strength of the domestic supply chain.

This rapid growth is driven by policy incentives such as the advanced manufacturing production tax credit and the CHIPS and Science Act, which have spurred investments in U.S. solar manufacturing. Over the past few years, U.S. module production has increased fivefold, making the country the third-largest solar module producer globally.
