Delhi Assembly to Become India’s First Fully Solar-Powered Vidhan Sabha
May 13, 2025
In a landmark move, the Delhi Assembly is set to become the first Vidhan Sabha in India to run entirely on solar power, with the launch of a 500 kW rooftop solar plant. The project, inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Speaker Vijender Gupta, will cover 3,250 square metres of the historic 1912-built Assembly building and aims to eliminate the INR 2 crore annual electricity bill.
Scheduled for completion in just 45 days—15 days ahead of schedule, the plant is expected to reduce monthly power costs by INR 15 lakh and may even allow for surplus power generation, creating an additional income stream. Annual savings of INR 1.75 crore will be redirected to development projects, making this initiative part of a larger modernization effort that includes digitising the Assembly library, implementing the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA), and launching a heritage-themed light and sound show.
Lieutenant Governor Saxena praised the initiative as a sustainable and future-ready solution, while also reaffirming his commitment to preserving the capital’s architectural legacy by seeking heritage status for the Assembly building with DDA support.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta connected the project to the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana, a central subsidy scheme that offers up to INR 78,000 for residential solar installations. She emphasized the role of solar in addressing Delhi’s rising power demand, currently at 8,000 MW and expected to reach 9,000 MW, asserting that clean energy is essential for sustainable urban growth.
