Green Ammonia: The Future of Sustainable Shipping

Feb 09, 2025

The maritime industry is under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) targeting a 50% cut in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. Green ammonia is emerging as a promising alternative fuel due to its ability to be produced using renewable energy sources. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), it could contribute up to 43% of the maritime energy mix by 2050. One of the key advantages of green ammonia is that existing ammonia infrastructure can facilitate its integration into the maritime fuel supply chain. However, production costs remain high, creating a challenge for widespread adoption. Research indicates that financial incentives and supportive policies are crucial to making green ammonia economically viable. Without such measures, costs will remain a significant barrier.

The transition to green ammonia can drive innovation in production technologies and foster collaborations between the energy and shipping industries. Investments in research, infrastructure, and policy development will be necessary to scale production and make it cost-competitive with conventional fuels. If these efforts are coordinated effectively, green ammonia could play a central role in decarbonizing maritime shipping, helping the sector meet its long-term sustainability goals.
