Hydropower Push in J&K: Major Projects Along Chenab River Show Steady Progress
May 08, 2025
Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation Ltd. (JKPDCL) has shared updates on five key hydroelectric projects (HEPs) under construction along the Chenab River, signaling strong progress in the region’s renewable energy infrastructure.
The Pakal Dul project, located in Kishtwar district on the Marusudar River, has achieved 66% progress. Developed by CVPP—a joint venture of JKSPDC and NHPC—this major reservoir-based project involves an investment of Rs12,669 crore. The nearby Kiru HEP is 55% complete and will generate 624 MW from a concrete gravity dam. It is also being developed by CVPP with a budget of Rs4,287 crore.
Further downstream, the Kwar HEP, another CVPP project, has reached 19% progress. It’s a run-of-the-river scheme costing Rs4,949 crore. Meanwhile, the 850 MW Ratle HEP, managed by RHPCL (NHPC and J&K Government), has achieved 21% progress, backed by an investment of Rs6,275 crore.
In addition, the 930 MW Kirthai Stage-II project is expected to be completed by November 2028.
All these projects are part of India’s broader hydro strategy and are located on the Chenab River, which falls under the Indus Water Treaty. However, India recently suspended the treaty following a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, making these projects geopolitically significant as well.
