India Achieves 4,000% Solar Growth, Reinforces Energy Storage Drive: Piyush Goyal at IESW 2025
Jul 11, 2025
At the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025 in New Delhi, Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that India’s renewable energy capacity has reached 227 GW, marking a 4,000% surge in installed solar capacity. Goyal declared India as likely the first G20 nation to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
The Minister cited successful local initiatives like Palli village in Jammu and Kashmir becoming India’s first carbon-neutral panchayat. He also spotlighted the IESW venue, Yashobhoomi, as a model of sustainable infrastructure with rooftop solar and energy-efficient systems.
Goyal highlighted massive progress in solar manufacturing—38-fold growth in module capacity and 21-fold in PV cells over the last decade—fueled by initiatives such as PM Surya Ghar Yojana, PM Kusum Yojana, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC).
He stressed the vital role of energy storage technologies, including batteries, pumped hydro, and geothermal, in achieving India’s 500 GW renewable target by 2030. Goyal proposed a four-pronged approach focused on innovation, infrastructure, supply chain resilience, and full value chain development. He also emphasized leveraging the Rs1 lakh crore R&D Fund to achieve global competitiveness in next-generation storage technologies.
