India’s EV Push to Hit 12.3 Cr by 2032; Charging Points Must Scale 28X: IESA-CES Report
May 07, 2025
India’s electric vehicle (EV) transition is gaining momentum, with the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and Customized Energy Solutions (CES) projecting up to 12.3 crore EVs on Indian roads by 2032 under the National EV Targets (NEV) scenario. This aligns with India's EV30@30 ambition, aiming for 30% penetration of private electric four-wheelers (E4Ws) and 80% penetration for two- and three-wheelers by 2030.
The report, India Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Market Overview, highlights the surge in EVs, from 3.5 lakh in 2019 to 44 lakh in 2024—a 12x increase driven by policies like FAME-II. In 2024, two- and three-wheelers made up over 93% of India’s EV stock, while E4Ws and electric buses/trucks comprised 6% and <1>
To support this explosive growth, India must expand its charging infrastructure from 76,000 charging points in 2024 to between 9 lakh and 21 lakh by 2032, depending on adoption rates. Installed capacity would need to rise from 1.3 GW to 23 GW. Most current E4Ws rely on Type-2 AC chargers—primarily 3.3 kW units—installed in homes and residential complexes.
With a cumulative 2024 stock of 220,000 personal E4Ws, India had an estimated 320,000 private chargers, complemented by public and captive chargers where CCS2 fast chargers dominate capacity. Electric buses and trucks, projected to grow to 11 lakh units by 2032, are expected to be key drivers of high-power DC charging demand.
This ambitious scale-up, backed by government incentives and strategic investments, is vital for India’s climate goals and for transforming the country into a global EV leader.
