India’s Installed Renewable Energy Capacity Hits 220.10 GW with Record Solar Growth in FY 2024–25
Apr 12, 2025
India’s total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity has surged to 220.10 GW as of March 31, 2025, reflecting a record annual addition of 29.52 GW, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This sharp increase, up from 198.75 GW in the previous fiscal, highlights the country’s accelerating progress towards its 500 GW non-fossil energy target by 2030, part of the Panchamrit commitments.
Solar energy was the standout contributor in FY 2024–25, adding 23.83 GW, a major leap from the 15.03 GW installed the previous year. India’s total solar capacity now stands at 105.65 GW, comprising 81.01 GW of ground-mounted systems, 17.02 GW rooftop solar, 2.87 GW hybrid components, and 4.74 GW off-grid solar.
Wind energy also showed steady growth, with 4.15 GW added during the fiscal, bringing the cumulative installed wind capacity to 50.04 GW. Meanwhile, bioenergy installations rose to 11.58 GW, including 0.53 GW from off-grid and waste-to-energy projects. Small Hydro Power reached 5.10 GW, with another 0.44 GW under development.
In addition to the installed base, India boasts a robust RE project pipeline of 234.46 GW, which includes 169.40 GW under implementation and 65.06 GW already tendered. Of this, 65.29 GW comes from emerging solutions such as hybrid systems, RTC power, peaking power, and thermal + RE bundling, showcasing the country’s diversified clean energy strategy.
