India’s Rooftop Solar Push Gains Momentum with 12.87 Lakh Households Onboard Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana

May 16, 2025

Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, more than 12.87 lakh households have already adopted rooftop solar as of May 13, 2025. The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and offers substantial Central Financial Assistance (CFA) — up to 60% of the benchmark cost for the first 2 kWp and 40% for the next 1 kWp. No CFA is provided beyond 3 kWp. For group housing societies and RWAs, a flat Rs18,000/kWp is offered for systems up to 500 kWp.

The uptake is strongest in Gujarat (4.6 lakh+ households) and Maharashtra (3 lakh+ households), followed by states like Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. This rapid adoption reflects growing awareness and the tangible benefits for families — lower electricity bills, local economic stimulation, and increased access to clean energy.

The initiative signifies a major shift from mere policy to real impact, aligning with MNRE's broader vision of energy independence, citizen empowerment, and sustainable growth. As peak demand pressures rise across the nation, distributed solar adoption at the household level is proving to be a critical piece of India’s energy puzzle.
