THDCIL Signs MoU and PPA with Gujarat for 184.08 MW from India’s First Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant

Jun 28, 2025

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) to supply 184.08 MW of clean power from the Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Uttarakhand — India’s first of its kind.

The agreement is aimed at meeting Gujarat’s peak power demands while enabling large-scale integration of renewable energy into the grid. Present during the signing were key dignitaries, including Kanubhai Desai, Gujarat’s Minister of Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals, and R.K. Vishnoi, CMD of THDCIL.

Vishnoi emphasized that the Tehri PSP showcases THDCIL’s engineering innovation and commitment to a sustainable energy future. The variable speed technology enables grid flexibility and reliability, critical in a power system with growing renewable energy share. The MoU and PPA are aligned with the Government of India’s strategy to promote pumped hydro as a flexible, green alternative to support grid stability.

Sipan Kumar Garg, Director (Finance), THDCIL, highlighted the project’s strategic value and THDCIL’s ongoing commitment to sustainable and commercially viable clean energy solutions that support India's energy transition goals.
