Websol Energy’s 600 MW Solar Cell Line at Falta SEZ to Boost Solar Production by 2025
Dec 24, 2024
Websol Energy System Limited, a Kolkata-based pioneer in the solar energy sector, has provided a significant update on its upcoming 600 MW solar cell line at its FALTA SEZ plant.
The company has informed the stock exchanges that it has placed purchase orders for the required equipment and made advance payments for the project.
This new manufacturing line is expected to be installed and commissioned in the first quarter of 2025-26 (Q1 2025), with commercial production scheduled to begin by July 2025.
A Remarkable Turnaround Story in Green Energy
Websol has experienced a remarkable turnaround in the last year, with a 600% increase in stock returns, establishing itself as one of the biggest success stories in India’s green energy market. This surge in stock price reflects the company's impressive financial performance, as evidenced by its strong revenue growth.
In Q2 2024, Websol reported revenues of ?144 crore and net profits of ?42 crore— a sharp contrast to the previous year’s poor financial results, when the company was in losses.
Expansion with New Manufacturing Facilities
As part of its strategic expansion, Websol has invested approximately ?220 crore in the development of two key facilities: a 600 MW Mono PERC bifacial solar cell manufacturing unit and a 550 MW module manufacturing facility.
The commercial production of the first phase of the 600 MW Mono PERC bifacial solar cell project began in the last quarter of 2024, while the 550 MW module line commenced in August 2024.
These new capacities are expected to significantly improve the company’s performance over the coming quarters, with Websol’s reputation as a quality player and its strong research foundations in solar technology serving as additional advantages.
Impact of ALMM and SEZ Challenges
Looking ahead, Websol faces the upcoming challenge of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), which will extend to cell manufacturing from June 2026.
While this regulatory change may present challenges, Websol’s legacy and established position in the market position it well to take advantage of these evolving market dynamics. Additionally, the company’s operations within the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) present both opportunities and potential challenges as it navigates evolving policies.
