10 Lakh Homes Solarized Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Achievements and Roadblocks
Mar 22, 2025
India has reached a significant milestone by solarizing 10 lakh homes under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana (PMSGY). However, the installation-to-application ratio remains low due to multiple hurdles. Key challenges include delays by DISCOMs in net metering and load enhancement approvals, supply issues with Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) modules, and limited bank financing due to a lack of awareness and high loan rejection rates.
Despite the government's claim of subsidy disbursal within 15 days, over 4 lakh installations are still awaiting subsidies, with delays extending up to four months. Issues like duplicate serial numbers and minor name mismatches further slow down the process. Similarly, loan applications remain low due to complex procedures, high rejection rates, and poor rural bank participation.
To accelerate adoption, DISCOMs must streamline approval processes, ensure stable DCR module supply, and educate consumers about financing options. Vendors should actively support customers in navigating loan applications, and banks should play a greater role under the proposed Renewable Energy Finance Obligation (REFO). Addressing these concerns will be crucial for the scheme’s success and faster solar adoption.
