ACEN Australia Secures Approval for $3 Billion Robbins Island Wind Project
Sept 03, 2025
ACEN Australia has received federal approval for its 900 MW Robbins Island Wind Project in Tasmania, a milestone reached after more than eight years of rigorous environmental and regulatory assessments. The $3 billion development is one of the state’s largest private investments and will generate enough electricity to power 500,000 homes. It is expected to create 400 construction jobs, contribute $30 million annually to Tasmania’s economy, and provide $27 million in community benefits for the Circular Head region.
Managing Director David Pollington highlighted that the project balances biodiversity conservation with the urgent need for clean energy as Australia phases out coal. He emphasized the wind farm’s strong resource base, capable of producing 30% more power than comparable projects, which will help Tasmania meet over half of its 2030 clean energy targets and support Victoria as coal capacity declines.
The project will complement Tasmania’s hydro resources, enabling hydro to serve as flexible on-demand storage rather than baseload generation. However, progress depends on the timely approval of the transmission line, expected by 2026, with generation slated to begin in 2030. The project will play a key role in meeting federal and state emissions reduction commitments while driving economic and energy transition benefits.
