Adani and Bhutan’s DGPC Partner to Develop 5,000 MW Hydropower, Boosting Regional Clean Energy Ties

May 09, 2025

Adani Group and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-develop 5,000 MW of hydropower projects in Bhutan, marking a major step in cross-border clean energy collaboration. The agreement was signed in Thimphu in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister and other senior officials.

This partnership builds upon their ongoing collaboration in the Wangchhu Hydropower Project (570/900 MW), where DGPC holds a 51% majority stake and Adani 49%. The broader 5,000 MW initiative will include hydropower and pumped storage projects, to be developed in phases after detailed project reports are prepared.

Adani Green Hydro’s COO Naresh Telgu highlighted the project’s role in enhancing regional energy security and enabling Bhutan to export reliable green energy to India. DGPC’s MD, Dasho ChhewangRinzin, emphasized the strategic significance of this partnership in deepening Bhutan–India energy ties and leveraging Adani’s global expertise.

This collaboration supports Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, which aims to add 20,000 MW by 2040, including diversification into solar and geothermal power. Adani will also help integrate Bhutanese power with Indian energy markets, ensuring stable offtake and strengthening Bhutan’s position in South Asia’s energy trade.

A Shareholders’ Agreement for the Wangchhu Project was also signed, reflecting concrete progress in this strategic alliance.
