Adani Green Signs 1,250 MW Pumped Hydro Storage PPA with UPPCL, Boosting India’s Energy Storage Push

Apr 25, 2025

Adani Green Energy Ltd. (AGEL), through its subsidiary Adani Hydro Energy Five, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (UPPCL) for 1,250 MW of pumped hydro energy storage. This 40-year agreement marks a major milestone for AGEL’s commitment to large-scale storage solutions critical for integrating renewable energy and ensuring round-the-clock power supply.

The project will be developed in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, and was secured by AGEL's Adani Saur Urja unit through an e-reverse auction in February 2025. Construction is expected to be completed in six years. The fixed cost has been set at Rs76.53 lakh/MW annually, excluding taxes.

Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) like this use excess solar energy during the day to pump water uphill, which is then released to generate electricity during peak demand hours. Recognized for their scalability, safety, and reliability, PSPs are vital to India's energy storage roadmap.

AGEL currently operates 14,290 MW of renewable capacity and is targeting 50 GW by 2030 through a diversified mix of solar, wind, hybrid, and hydro projects. This PPA further solidifies AGEL’s leadership in India’s renewable energy sector and highlights its focus on both grid stability and sustainability.
