Adani Power Raises Thermal Capacity Target to 41 GW by 2032 with Rs1.8 Lakh Crore Investment
Sept 03, 2025
Adani Power has revised its thermal power capacity expansion plan to 41 GW by FY 2032, up from its earlier 18.15 GW target, marking the largest private sector thermal capacity addition in India. This move aligns with the government’s goal of adding 80 GW of new thermal power capacity by 2032. Adani Power’s expansion, backed by a planned investment of Rs1.8 lakh crore, includes 11 GW of new projects funded largely through internal accruals, supported by strong fund flows from its existing 18,150 MW portfolio across eight states.
The company has already placed advance orders for boilers, turbines, and generators (BTG) covering 23,720 MW, giving it a competitive edge in project commissioning. Current projects under construction include a 300 MW unit at Mahan in Madhya Pradesh and 1,320 MW expansions at Raipur and Raigarh in Chhattisgarh. To strengthen coal supply security, Adani Power has acquired four coal mines with 14 MTPA capacity, three in Madhya Pradesh and one in Maharashtra, with production at one mine starting this year.
Strategic plant locations near domestic coal mines and ports will enhance supply efficiency and reduce costs. Analysts expect private sector participation in thermal investments to rise to nearly one-third of total capacity additions, compared to just 7–8% in recent years. Adani Power’s aggressive expansion highlights the balancing role of thermal power in meeting India’s surging energy demand and ensuring reliable baseload capacity alongside renewables.
