Advancing Carbon Removal: CEEW Signed MoU with CRIA

Feb 04, 2025

A new milestone in India’s Net Zero journey achieved with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between CEEW and the Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA). This partnership is set to accelerate research and engagement on durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and sustainability. By bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders—including government agencies, industries, financial institutions, academia, and civil society—the collaboration aims to drive impactful climate action aligned with India’s long-term carbon neutrality targets.

Under this MoU, both organizations will engage in joint research, consultations, and strategic outreach efforts to reshape the discourse around carbon removal technologies and sustainability. Events, expert discussions, and investment-focused dialogues will be key components of the initiative, aimed at fostering greater cooperation among policymakers and industry leaders.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change by actively extracting CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it permanently. While renewable energy and energy efficiency measures focus on reducing emissions, CDR technologies complement these efforts by addressing legacy emissions that remain in the atmosphere. However, the sector faces challenges such as high costs, limited commercial viability, and the need for strong policy frameworks.
Through this collaboration, research will be directed toward identifying scalable and economically viable solutions that can be integrated into India’s decarbonization strategy.
