Amazon Launches First Water Replenishment Project in Yamuna Basin to Tackle Delhi’s Water Crisis
Jun 06, 2025
Amazon has launched its first water replenishment initiative in India’s Yamuna River watershed, upstream of New Delhi, to help address the region’s acute water scarcity. The project, implemented by Hasten Regeneration, will restore check dams, ponds, and construct recharge structures to replenish over 400 million litres of water annually. This initiative aligns with Amazon’s goal to return more water to Indian communities than it consumes in direct operations by 2027.
The project was announced at Amazon’s inaugural Water Dialogues 2025, a platform fostering collaboration on water sustainability, and featured participation from water experts like Ramveer Tanwar and policymakers such as MP Sasmit Patra. The programme combines nature-based solutions with engineering interventions and will be supported by Arpan Seva Sansthan and Clear Water Dynamics.
Since 2020, Amazon’s broader sustainability efforts in India have positively impacted over 1 million people through lake restoration and community-based water management. The Yamuna basin project further complements Amazon’s green strategy, which includes renewable energy adoption, energy-efficient fulfilment centres, and the global Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
By focusing on aquifer recharge, erosion control, and community engagement, Amazon positions itself as a key player in India’s climate resilience and water stewardship efforts, particularly in water-stressed regions like Delhi.
