Australia Launches CIS Tenders for 1.6 GW Renewables and 2.4 GWh Storage in Western Australia
Aug 30, 2025
The Australian government has opened two new tenders under its Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), targeting 1,600 MW of renewable energy and 2,400 MWh of clean dispatchable capacity in Western Australia. Registration closes on October 10, 2025, with bids due by November 7, and results expected in March–April 2026.
The renewable energy (Tender 5) and storage (Tender 6) projects must connect to the South-West Interconnected System, covering Perth and surrounding regions. Renewable projects must have at least 30 MW of capacity, while storage projects require a minimum of 30 MW with a two-hour duration. All projects must show a credible pathway to commissioning before December 31, 2030, with preference given to earlier completion dates.
The tenders are expected to unlock around $4 billion in private investment, securing at least 2.3 GW of renewable energy and 4.4 GWh of storage for Western Australia. The CIS supports the nation’s broader goal of achieving 82% renewable energy penetration, or 40 GW of capacity, by 2030 as coal is phased out.
Earlier CIS rounds awarded 654 MW/2,595 MWh of battery storage in March 2025 and 6.38 GW of renewable capacity, including 3.6 GWh hybrid projects, in December 2024.
