BatX Energies Secures Technology Development Board Support to Scale Up Indigenous Battery Recycling Technology

Jun 26, 2025

The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has extended financial support to BatX Energies, a Gurugram-based startup, for its innovative battery recycling project titled ‘Technologies for generation of battery grade materials and value addition through closed loop’. The project aims to commercialize a proprietary, indigenously developed hydrometallurgical recycling process that can extract high-purity lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries.

BatX Energies has created a dual-mode (wet and dry) black mass recovery technology that is battery chemistry-agnostic and achieves high separation efficiency with 97–99% metal recovery. The patented process covers every stage from battery collection and shredding to metal leaching and purification—significantly reducing reliance on imported equipment and supporting India’s push for critical mineral self-sufficiency.

With the TDB's backing, the company plans to upgrade from its pilot unit to a commercial-scale facility, enabling it to serve both domestic and export markets. The initiative aligns with national priorities of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and circular economy promotion. BatX has filed seven patents (two granted) and aims to position India as a global leader in sustainable battery recycling and clean-tech innovation. The recovered compounds meet global standards for reuse in energy storage systems.
