BHEL and Hitachi Energy to Build 6,000 MW HVDC Link for Adani Subsidiary
Apr 05, 2025
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), in consortium with Hitachi Energy India, has signed a major contract with Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. (AESL), for the development of a 6,000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC transmission link. This bi-directional ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) system will connect Bhadla (Rajasthan)—a renewable energy hub—with Fatehpur (Uttar Pradesh), a growing industrial and transport centre.
Set to be commissioned by 2029, the project aligns with India’s ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The HVDC link will span over 950 km and enable high-efficiency, long-distance power transmission while offering enhanced grid stability and bi-directional power flow.
This marks BHEL’s fourth UHVDC project, following its successful execution of major links like North-East Agra, Raigarh-Pugalur, and the ongoing Khavda-Nagpur link—also in collaboration with Hitachi Energy.
For this project, BHEL will manufacture and supply key components including Converter Transformers, Shunt Reactors, Filter Bank Capacitors, MV Switchgear, and Instrument Transformers from its Bhopal plant, and Thyristor Valves from its Electronics Division in Bengaluru. These components will facilitate AC-to-DC conversion at Bhadla, DC transmission across the link, and DC-to-AC reconversion at Fatehpur.
BHEL’s Transmission Business Group will also be responsible for designing and installing the massive 765 kV/400 kV power evacuation system at Fatehpur, and 400 kV AC substations at both Bhadla and Bhadla Extension.
This project reinforces BHEL’s leadership in India’s HVDC space and supports the country’s growing renewable energy backbone through cutting-edge grid technologies.
