BPCL and Sembcorp Form Joint Venture to Develop Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Projects in India

Apr 09, 2025

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) has partnered with Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Pvt Ltd. (SGHIPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, to establish a joint venture (JV) aimed at accelerating India’s transition to clean energy. The collaboration will focus on the development of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, supporting India’s net-zero targets and industrial decarbonization.

The JV will explore a broad spectrum of clean energy initiatives, including green hydrogen and green ammonia production, bunkering solutions, port emissions reduction, and other emerging green fuel technologies. This partnership brings together Sembcorp’s 6 GW renewable portfolio and global experience in clean energy solutions with BPCL’s petroleum infrastructure and operational reach across India.

BPCL Chairman and MD G Krishnakumar emphasized that this collaboration marks a major step forward in BPCL's journey to become a Net Zero Energy Company by 2040, with a 10 GW renewable energy target. He highlighted that the JV would combine technological innovation, resources, and sectoral strengths to create scalable green energy solutions.

Sembcorp’s President and CEO of Renewables (West) and CEO of Hydrogen Business, Vipul Tuli, said the partnership aims to support the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors by leveraging green hydrogen and ammonia. Sembcorp has identified India as a key market for renewable hydrogen development, positioning itself to deliver low-cost, large-scale solutions in the country.

The move aligns with India’s broader goals under its National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets the development of 5 MMT of green hydrogen annually by 2030 and aims to position the country as a global green hydrogen hub. The BPCL–Sembcorp JV could play a pivotal role in contributing to these national ambitions, creating new opportunities across energy, industry, and transportation.
