BYD’s NFPP Sodium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System Connected to the Grid
Feb 25, 2025
BYD, in collaboration with Natrium Energy, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Tangshan Sanyou Group, has successfully connected the world’s first megawatt-level NFPP sodium-ion battery energy storage system to the grid. The system, located in the Tangshan Nanbao Economic Development Zone, marks a major milestone in sodium-ion battery commercialization.
The project was launched in July 2024, with the first phase involving a 2.3 MWh NFPP sodium-ion battery system installed at Sanyou Chemical’s battery-grade sodium carbonate production base. Since its grid connection on January 12, 2025, the system has operated stably, demonstrating high reliability and efficiency. It completes two full charge-discharge cycles daily, with a cumulative discharge surpassing 180 MWh and an impressive efficiency of 91.36%.
The energy storage system enhances grid stability by integrating with the existing power infrastructure, providing a safe and effective alternative to lithium-based solutions. During the acceptance process, experts confirmed that all system functions, including safety, charging, discharging, and fire alarm mechanisms, met the required standards.
This breakthrough reinforces BYD’s leadership in energy storage innovation and paves the way for wider adoption of sodium-ion batteries as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to lithium-based storage.
