California’s Battery Storage Capacity Surges 1,944%

May 21, 2025

California has witnessed a dramatic 1,944% increase in battery storage capacity, growing from just 770 MW in 2019 to 15,763 MW in 2025. This expansion includes the addition of 2,300 MW in the last year alone, reinforcing California’s status as a global leader in clean energy innovation and grid resilience.

Battery energy storage plays a pivotal role in the state’s clean energy strategy by storing excess solar and wind power and releasing it during peak demand, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply. Looking ahead, California aims to deploy over 48,000 MW of storage capacity by 2045, with investments already underway in long-duration systems, advanced safety protocols, and residential and commercial backup solutions.

This battery boom aligns with Governor Newsom’s “build more, faster” initiative, designed to accelerate climate action while bolstering the state’s economy. The rapid scale-up not only helps reduce carbon emissions but also creates green jobs, showcasing how economic growth and a clean energy transition can move forward together.
