China’s Energy Transition Outlook 2024 Highlights Long-Term Net-Zero Vision

May 08, 2025

China is moving rapidly in the global shift towards clean energy, as shown in the China Energy Transformation Outlook 2024 (CETO24) released in February 2025. The report reviews China’s progress over the past decade and outlines how the country plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

One major point is that saving energy and using it efficiently is crucial. China's use of electricity in various sectors is growing and is expected to more than double by 2060. Another key focus is building an energy system dominated by wind and solar. In 2023, over half of China's power capacity came from non-fossil sources, and by 2060, renewables are expected to account for over 90% of electricity generation.

To manage this clean power, China will develop a smart and strong power grid by 2035. It will also boost electricity transfers between regions by over 140% compared to 2022. Innovation plays a big role, with large-scale investments planned in solar, wind, and heat technologies — around 160 trillion RMB by 2060.

Lastly, China must continue reforming its energy policies and legal systems to support this transition, while also preparing for future uncertainties in its journey to a low-carbon economy.
