Coal India and UPRVUNL Ink MoU for 500 MW Solar Power Project in Uttar Pradesh

May 05, 2025

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL) for the development of a 500 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh. The agreement, formalized on May 5, 2025, in Lucknow, underscores a strategic pivot by both entities towards green energy and aligns with broader national goals of clean energy transition.

The proposed solar project is aimed at contributing to Uttar Pradesh's growing energy demands while reinforcing long-term energy security through sustainable sources. This initiative also supports CIL’s commitment to renewable energy expansion as part of its diversification from coal-dominant operations.

In addition to the 500 MW project, the MoU includes provisions for exploring further opportunities for collaboration between CIL and UPRVUNL in the renewable energy space. The partnership is a testament to the increasing alignment between traditional energy companies and state utilities in embracing solar energy as a viable alternative.

This move is in sync with India's ambitious renewable energy targets and demonstrates the evolving role of legacy energy companies in shaping a cleaner and more resilient power ecosystem through strategic collaborations and sustainable project development.
