Coal India Invites Bids for Power Offtake from 4.5 GW Renewable Energy Projects
May 20, 2025
Coal India has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to potential buyers for purchasing power at a fixed tariff from its upcoming 4.5 GW renewable energy projects. The capacity includes 2.5 to 3 GW of solar power and 1.5 to 2 GW of wind power. The projects will be developed in phases, with Coal India managing land acquisition, grid connectivity, and EPC contracts. The generated electricity, expected to be at least 11,500 million units annually with solar contributing 60%, will be supplied under long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Bidders must submit their proposals by June 9, 2025, with bid opening scheduled for June 10. Buyers are required to purchase electricity on a take-or-pay basis and provide necessary payment security. They must also handle all transmission and distribution charges beyond the delivery point, which will be the nearest substation of the interstate transmission system (ISTS). Coal India aims for power supply to begin within 24 months of signing the PPAs.
This move follows Coal India’s December 2024 EoI to develop a 1 GW solar project in Rajasthan, signaling the company’s increasing focus on expanding its renewable energy footprint alongside its traditional coal business.
