Delhi Power Minister Inspects South Asia’s Largest Utility-Scale BESS at Kilokri
Apr 17, 2025
Delhi’s Power Minister, Shri Ashish Sood, recently visited BSES Rajdhani Power Limited’s (BRPL) upcoming 20 MW / 40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kilokri, South Delhi. The visit marks a major milestone in bolstering Delhi’s electricity infrastructure. Located at the 33/11 kV Kilokri Substation, this project is set to be India’s first commercially approved and South Asia’s largest utility-scale standalone BESS installed at the distribution level.
The minister reviewed the project’s progress and praised BRPL’s efforts. He was accompanied by BRPL CEO Shri Abhishek Ranjan and representatives from project partners including IndiGrid, GEAPP (Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet), and amperehour.
Once commissioned, the system will be capable of delivering four hours of backup power daily, split between two hours in the day and two at night. This will provide improved power reliability to around 1,00,000 residents in the Kilokri area, a densely populated part of South Delhi. This BESS will not only help in managing peak load but also contribute to integrating more renewable energy into Delhi’s grid, reflecting a big step forward in energy storage and smart grid development.
