Delhi Records Strong Uptake of Rooftop Solar Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
Oct 14, 2025
Delhi has witnessed a substantial increase in rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with more than 17,000 systems commissioned to date. The initiative, jointly implemented by the Delhi Government and local distribution companies (discoms), is driving clean energy adoption across the capital while reducing electricity expenses for residents.
Financial Incentives Fuel Household Participation
In an open letter to Delhi residents, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta encouraged citizens to embrace solar energy, highlighting its long-term financial savings and environmental advantages.
Under the scheme, households installing solar systems of up to 3 kW capacity are eligible for multiple incentives, including:
• Rs30,000 subsidy provided by the Delhi Government
• Rs78,000 subsidy from the Central Government
• Low-interest bank loans ranging between 6.5% and 7%
This translates to a total support of ?1.08 lakh per household. Consumers with an average monthly usage of 500 units can effectively achieve zero electricity bills, in addition to a generation-based incentive (GBI) of Rs900 per month for five years.
Depending on consumption patterns and discom adjustments, participating households are expected to save approximately ?3,000–?3,200 per month.
Discoms Drive Solar Integration Across the Capital
Delhi’s discoms have been instrumental in implementing the rooftop solar initiative and expanding renewable energy penetration across the city.
BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd. (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd. (BYPL) have collectively energized over 11,100 rooftop solar systems, contributing more than 228 MW of installed capacity. These installations span residential, educational, industrial, and commercial sectors.
To further accelerate adoption, the discoms have launched extensive outreach campaigns through Solar Camps, Surya Rath roadshows, Solar Melas, Resident Welfare Association (RWA) meetings, street plays, door-to-door campaigns, and social media engagement.
Meanwhile, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (TPDDL) has surpassed 100 MW of cumulative rooftop solar capacity within its service area, covering 6,300 installations. These include 4,680 residential, 1,616 commercial and industrial, and 42 group or virtual net-metered systems.
Through net metering, surplus solar power generated by consumers is fed back into the grid, allowing them to receive proportional financial credits on their bills.
Accelerating Delhi’s Transition to Clean Energy
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has emerged as a key enabler of Delhi’s renewable energy goals, empowering consumers to actively participate in the clean energy transition.
The scheme’s success is attributed to a comprehensive policy framework, multi-level subsidies, and strong coordination between government bodies and distribution utilities. By reducing electricity costs and promoting energy independence, the initiative is fostering a more sustainable and resilient energy ecosystem in the capital.
With continued participation and growing public awareness, Delhi is on course to become one of India’s leading cities in rooftop solar adoption, contributing significantly to the nation’s renewable energy targets.
Key Highlights:
• Over 17,000 rooftop solar installations completed
• Rs1.08 lakh total subsidy support for each household
• Up to Rs3,200 monthly savings on electricity bills
• 328 MW+ of cumulative rooftop capacity in Delhi
• Discoms conducting large-scale public engagement initiatives
