Delhi’s Peak Power Demand Hits Season High of 6,867 MW Amid Heatwave

May 19, 2025

Delhi's peak power demand surged to 6,867 MW on Friday—the highest of the summer season so far—as temperatures soared amid ongoing heatwave conditions. According to the State Load Dispatch Center, demand is projected to reach a record 9,000 MW in late June or early July, surpassing last year’s all-time high of 8,656 MW.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast maximum temperatures between 40°C and 41°C over the next two days, with levels expected to be 1–3°C above normal. Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL), which supplies power to North Delhi, confirmed it successfully managed Friday's peak without any network constraints or disruptions.

To ensure reliability and prevent outages during periods of surging demand, Tata Power-DDL has implemented a multi-layered strategy that includes bilateral power purchase agreements, power exchanges, reserve shutdowns, and contingency plans for short-term procurement. The utility is also deploying advanced load-forecasting and statistical modeling tools to enhance demand prediction and preparedness.

As the capital braces for intensifying heat and escalating energy needs, the pressure mounts on utilities to maintain stable supply and infrastructure readiness, especially amid the broader national trend of rising peak demand and delayed thermal power capacity additions.
