DVC Invites Bids for 250 MW/500 MWh BESS in Jharkhand Under Phase I Expansion

Apr 22, 2025

Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has issued a tender to set up a 250 MW/500 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Maithon, Jharkhand. This project is a part of Phase I of DVC’s larger plan to install 500 MW/1,000 MWh of BESS capacity across Jharkhand and West Bengal. The last date to submit bids is May 21, 2025, and they will be opened on May 22, 2025.

The scope includes complete design, engineering, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of a transportable and fully functional BESS. The system must be operational for at least 12 years and include maintenance services. It must come with advanced systems like battery management (BMS), energy management (EMS), power conditioning (PCS), communication, and protection systems.

The BESS will be charged using floating solar and hydro projects and should discharge 250 MW for two hours daily, maintaining 85% round-trip efficiency and 95% availability. Bidders need experience in PCS and BESS projects and must meet strict eligibility and technical criteria. Spares, tools, and warranties are also part of the package.

The project reflects India’s increased focus on energy storage as BESS capacity under viability gap funding has been raised from 4,000 MWh to 13,200 MWh due to falling battery prices.
