EDF Backs 360 MW Staythorpe Battery Storage Project with Long-Term Deal
Sept 13, 2025
EDF has entered into a long-term agreement with renewable developer Elements Green to deliver the 360 MW/720 MWh Staythorpe Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Nottinghamshire, UK. Currently under early-stage construction, the project is scheduled to become operational by 2027 and will be one of the UK’s largest battery storage facilities. Once live, it will have the capacity to power over 95,000 homes for a full day, providing critical flexibility to balance supply and demand while supporting greater integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
Under the deal, EDF’s Wholesale Market Services team will provide guaranteed income from grid balancing, alongside a 15-year capacity market contract, giving the project strong financial security. EDF will also manage operations via its Powershift platform to maximise market returns.
Elements Green recently secured financial close on a €140 million unitranche debt facility from Goldman Sachs Alternatives, enabling full-scale construction and energisation. The project is expected to boost grid stability, create skilled local jobs, enhance biodiversity, and contribute to community initiatives.
EDF now has more than 950 MW of battery storage under contract across Great Britain, reinforcing its role in building a flexible, resilient, and low-carbon power system. Both EDF and Elements Green emphasized Staythorpe’s significance as a landmark project that will advance the UK’s net-zero ambitions and strengthen long-term energy security.
