EU Approves Austria and Lithuania’s Hydrogen Aid Schemes Under European Hydrogen Bank

Mar 11, 2025

The European Commission has approved Austria (€400 million) and Lithuania (€36 million) aid schemes under the European Hydrogen Bank's "Auctions-as-a-Service" (AaaS) mechanism to boost renewable hydrogen production.

Key Details:

  • Austria will support the production of 112,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen, reducing 536,000 tonnes of CO2.
  • Lithuania will produce 13,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen, cutting 61,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
  • The aid will be granted through the 2nd Hydrogen Bank auction, expected to conclude in Q1 2025.
  • These schemes align with EU targets for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) in transport and industry under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).

Meanwhile, Spain has also announced a funding plan between €280-400 million, currently open for public consultation until March 14, 2025.

This initiative strengthens Europe’s hydrogen economy, accelerates industrial decarbonization, and supports national hydrogen objectives across Austria, Lithuania, and Spain.
