GBPN and EMC Kerala Sign MoU to Decarbonize Kerala's Building Sector

Feb 09, 2025

In a groundbreaking move to decarbonize Kerala's building sector, GBPN (Global Buildings Performance Network) and the Energy Management Centre Kerala (EMC) have signed a Technical Advisory Support MoU at IEFK2025. This collaboration focuses on several key initiatives aimed at promoting energy-efficient, climate-responsive buildings in Kerala.

The MoU outlines three main areas of support:

  1. Digitalize to Decarbonize: GBPN will assist in developing, implementing, and enhancing an automated platform for the ENS 2024 and ECSBC building codes. It will also aid EMC in integrating Building Energy Efficiency Experts (BEEE) and Building Energy Simulation Experts (BESE).
  2. Health-Climate Nexus: GBPN will advance Healthy Building Guidelines that prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency. These guidelines will be integrated into state-level frameworks to promote well-being and climate resilience in Kerala.
  3. Net-Zero Roadmaps for Local Bodies: The partnership will help create a decarbonization roadmap template for Kerala's local bodies, strengthening the capacity of both urban and rural areas in adopting net-zero building practices.

Dr. Harikumar Ramadas, Director of EMC Kerala, and Dr. Sunita Purushottam, Board Chair of GBPN, signed the MoU with support from key representatives, including Mr. Dinesh Kumar A N and Mr. Subhash Babu B V. Dr. Purushottam emphasized that the partnership would play a pivotal role in accelerating Kerala's journey toward energy-efficient, healthy, and climate-responsive buildings. This collaboration aligns with the state's broader sustainability goals, enhancing the well-being of its residents while contributing to a greener, more resilient future.
