Georgia Power Begins Construction on 765 MW of Battery Storage Across Four Counties

May 09, 2025

Georgia Power has commenced construction on 765 MW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Bibb, Lowndes, Floyd, and Cherokee counties, enhancing grid reliability and supporting renewable integration. Approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission through the Integrated Resource Plan process, these BESS projects are designed to provide quickly dispatchable energy and improve system resilience, especially during peak demand periods.

The initiative builds on Georgia Power’s operational Mossy Branch BESS facility and includes four major developments. In Bibb County, the 128 MW Robins BESS is co-located with an existing solar site near Robins Air Force Base, allowing infrastructure reuse. The 49.5 MW Moody BESS in Lowndes County follows a similar co-location model near Moody Air Force Base.

Floyd County’s 57.5 MW Hammond BESS repurposes the transmission infrastructure of the decommissioned Plant Hammond coal site, offering a cost-effective capacity solution. In Cherokee County, the McGrau Ford BESS Phases I & II (530 MW total) leverage company-owned land and existing contracts to accelerate deployment.

With operations scheduled to begin between May and November 2026, these projects—executed by Burns & McDonnell and Crowder Industrial Construction—are central to Georgia Power’s strategy of integrating renewable energy with dependable storage to meet the state’s growing energy needs.
