Hindalco Industries, the metals arm of the Aditya Birla Group, has inaugurated its first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) component manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. With a capital investment of INR 500 crore, the 5-acre facility is designed to produce lightweight aluminium battery enclosures, supporting India’s shift towards sustainable mobility. It currently delivers 80,000 units annually and will scale up to 160,000 units.

Hindalco has already supplied 10,000 aluminium battery enclosures to Mahindra & Mahindra for its BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs. These enclosures offer up to 40% weight reduction over traditional steel designs, improving vehicle range by 8–10%, crash safety, and thermal performance. The plant promotes gender diversity, with nearly all machine operators being women, and is expected to create 1,000 jobs.

This move is aligned with the 'Make in India' initiative and Hindalco’s strategy to cater to India's growing EV value chain, expand into structural and crash-relevant aluminium parts for EV and ICE vehicles, and reduce import dependency. The use of low-carbon aluminium further emphasizes the company’s sustainability focus.
