Hindustan Power Secures 120 MWh BESS Project in Bihar Under MNRE’s Energy Storage Mission

Jun 20, 2025

Hindustan Power has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from the Bihar State Power Generation Company Ltd. (BSPGCL) to develop a 120 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) across three strategic substations in Bihar—Bhagalpur, Udakishanganj, and Sitamarhi (40 MWh each). The project, awarded under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) framework, will be implemented on a Build, Own, Operate, Transfer (BOOT) basis, with commissioning scheduled within 18 months of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) effective date.

This initiative is part of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) 500 MWh BESS program in Bihar, aiming to enhance grid reliability, especially during peak demand hours, and improve power quality. The BESS installations will support demand-side management and integration of renewable energy, contributing to the National Energy Storage Mission's objectives.

Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, stated that the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to technological innovation and sustainability, aligning with Bihar’s clean energy goals. This project strengthens Hindustan Power’s position in the energy storage sector while advancing India's grid flexibility and clean energy transition.
