Husk Power and Olam Agri Partner for 1.3 MW Solar-Battery Project in Nigeria

Apr 12, 2025

Husk Power Systems will deploy a 1.3 MWp solar PV system integrated with an 860 kWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at Olam Agri’s rice processing unit in Rukubi, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The project will operate under a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA), providing clean and stable power, reducing diesel reliance, cutting carbon emissions, and delivering cost savings.

This hybrid solar-battery system marks a significant milestone in Olam Agri’s sustainability roadmap. The company had already implemented a solar farm in 2024 to power mill operations and is now expanding its clean energy portfolio. The broader energy strategy also includes boosting energy efficiency, adopting cleaner-burning fuels, and optimising processes to lower emissions.

The project aligns with Nigeria’s policies promoting private-sector investment in renewables and underscores the country's push for clean energy in agriculture and industry. Olam Agri’s country head, Anil Nair, emphasized the initiative’s dual benefits—lowering carbon footprint and enhancing operational reliability.

Husk Power, already a leader in Nigeria’s solar mini-grid market, sees this partnership as a key step in its ambition to deploy hundreds of megawatts of C&I solar across Sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria’s C&I solar market is expected to add over 550 MW of new capacity by 2029, with this project setting a strong example for the sector.
