HyIron Produces First Green Hydrogen in Namibia, Advancing Green Industrialisation
Mar 16, 2025
HyIron has achieved a major milestone in sustainable iron production by successfully producing its first green hydrogen at the Oshivela plant in Namibia on March 12th. This marks a significant step in the country’s green industrialisation efforts.
Key Highlights:
- Largest Electrolyser in Southern Africa: The 12MW electrolyser is now operating within a smart microgrid, steadily generating green hydrogen.
- Towards Zero-Emission Iron Production: The plant aims to scale up to full capacity, laying the foundation for carbon-free iron production.
- Strong Government & SME Support: Over 60 Namibian SMEs played a vital role in building the facility, alongside the backing of Namibia’s Green Hydrogen Program.
- Global Collaboration: The project received support from Germany’s BMWK, along with key technical assistance from Peric Hydrogen Systems.
Having commenced construction in April 2024, completing this state-of-the-art facility in under a year is a testament to efficiency and teamwork. HyIron’s efforts contribute to a cost-neutral Green Deal, benefiting Namibia, Europe, and the global green economy.
