IEA Releases G20 Report on Carbon-Free Electricity, Backed by Korea’s CFE Initiative

Apr 18, 2025

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a comprehensive report titled Carbon-Free Electricity in G20 Countries – Status and the Way Forward, spotlighting the progress and prospects of carbon-free energy (CFE) across major global economies. Commissioned by the Republic of Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), the report aligns with Korea’s 2024 proposal of the Carbon-Free Energy Initiative—an effort to promote technology-neutral, carbon-free sources in the decarbonisation of the electricity sector.

The report examines the current energy mix of G20 nations, highlighting best practices and identifying gaps in policy frameworks, infrastructure, and investment to accelerate the adoption of carbon-free electricity. It places a strong emphasis on the importance of diverse low-emission technologies—such as renewables, nuclear, and carbon capture—while advocating for reliable grid systems and robust market designs to ensure affordable and secure transitions.

This initiative underlines the growing international push for coordinated action among G20 nations to meet climate goals and energy security needs. The IEA’s policy recommendations serve as a roadmap for governments aiming to scale up carbon-free electricity while ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition.
