IEA Supports India’s Digital Energy Stack for Greener, Smarter Grid

Jul 04, 2025

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has endorsed India's Digital Energy Stack, positioning it as a transformative digital public infrastructure that can enhance interoperability, demand-side management, and grid optimisation across the power sector. In an interview with ET, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the IEA’s global Digital Energy Grid (DEG) vision and praised India’s leadership in energy digitalisation.

The IEA and Foundation for Interoperability in Digital Economy (FIDE) recently co-published a white paper on DEG, envisioning a future where every household equipped with solar panels or electric vehicle (EV) batteries can generate, store, and trade electricity. The IEA sees potential in replicating India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) success model in the energy sector to foster innovation and subsidy delivery efficiency.

Birol also stressed the need for policy support to ensure sustainable and uninterrupted electricity for energy-intensive digital infrastructure like data centers, urging them to adopt the most efficient technologies.

The Indian government is reportedly developing a national digital energy platform, with a task force led by Nandan Nilekani and other key stakeholders. This collaboration signifies a deeper India-IEA partnership in achieving a secure, sustainable, and digitally empowered energy future.
