India Achieves 100 GW Solar Manufacturing Capacity, Strengthening Self-Reliance
Aug 16, 2025
India’s solar manufacturing industry has achieved a historic milestone, expanding its capacity from just 2.3 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, hailed the achievement as a key step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat, crediting the progress to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and transformative policies such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high-efficiency solar modules.
Experts believe the rapid expansion will not only strengthen India’s domestic renewable ecosystem but also position the country as a potential exporter in select global markets. With increasing scale, India is expected to enhance supply chain readiness in areas such as solar glass, ethylene vinyl acetate, and other critical components.
Santosh Kamath, Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal, highlighted that while the capacity growth is commendable, India must deepen its research & development and backward integration to achieve full self-reliance. Economies of scale, he added, will be crucial in helping India compete globally.
The achievement is backed by multiple government initiatives, including a Rs24,000 crore outlay under the PLI scheme, along with mandatory sourcing of locally made solar cells and modules under flagship programs such as PM-KUSUM.
This milestone also reinforces India’s broader target of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, with solar playing a central role in the clean energy transition.
