India Adds Record 7.3 GW of Renewable Energy in June; Solar Leads with 5.4 GW

Jul 11, 2025

India recorded a significant surge in renewable energy capacity addition in June 2025, adding 7.3 GW—more than five times the 1.4 GW added in the same month last year. This boost brought the country’s total installed non-fossil fuel capacity to 242.8 GW. Solar energy led the growth with 5.4 GW added in June alone, pushing total solar capacity to 116.3 GW.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) attributed the rise to strong central policies, effective state-level implementation, and growing sectoral adoption. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also emphasized the steady momentum in India’s clean energy journey on social media.

India now ranks third globally in both solar and wind energy capacity, following China and the U.S. During Q1 FY26, cumulative renewable capacity addition (excluding large hydro) reached 12.3 GW. These additions highlight the country’s accelerating shift from fossil fuels, especially amid rising peak power demands and the intermittent nature of renewable sources.

The impressive June performance signals India's progress toward its 2030 target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity, driven largely by solar energy. With sustained momentum, India is positioning itself as a global clean energy leader.
