India and Brazil Sign Six MoUs, Deepen Cooperation in Renewable Energy and Trade
Jul 10, 2025
On July 8, 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva signed six Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to strengthen bilateral ties across diverse sectors, including renewable energy, during a meeting at the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia.
The MoUs cover counter-terrorism, security information exchange, agricultural research, renewable energy, intellectual property rights, and digital cooperation. A major highlight was the agreement to enhance collaboration in the energy sector, particularly by exploring investments in hydrocarbons and renewables.
The leaders also emphasized strengthening bilateral trade by expanding the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), aiming to raise trade volume to USD 20 billion over the next five years. MERCOSUR comprises Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia (with Venezuela currently suspended), and its PTA with India has been active since June 2009.
Prime Minister Modi and President Lula reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, UN Security Council reforms, and intensified global climate action. They also agreed to create a ministerial-level mechanism for regular dialogue on trade and commerce.
In a gesture of deepening strategic ties, President Lula awarded Prime Minister Modi Brazil’s highest civilian honour — The Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross.
