India and Sri Lanka Strengthen Energy Ties with 120 MW Sampur Solar Project and Grid Connectivity

Apr 08, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently joined the virtual groundbreaking of Sri Lanka’s 120 MW Sampur Solar Power Plant, a major clean energy initiative supported by India. Alongside this, they inaugurated 5,000 rooftop solar units at religious sites and a new temperature-controlled storage facility in Dambulla, showcasing growing cooperation in energy and infrastructure.

PM Modi became the first foreign leader to visit Sri Lanka since President Dissanayake took office, underscoring the deepening partnership between the two countries. Both leaders discussed boosting ties in energy, trade, connectivity, defence, technology, and agriculture. They highlighted the importance of shared history and people-to-people ties while addressing issues like reconciliation and fishermen’s rights.

India reiterated its commitment to Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and regional integration under the Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision MAHASAGAR. Key announcements included a new grid interconnection agreement that will allow Sri Lanka to export power, plans for a multi-product pipeline, and the development of Trincomalee as an energy hub.

Seven majorMoUs were signed, covering sectors like energy, digitisation, health, and defence. A notable tripartite MoU between India, Sri Lanka, and the UAE will further boost the Trincomalee energy hub, marking a strategic regional energy partnership.
