India Becomes World’s Third-Largest Wind and Solar Power Producer, Surpasses Germany in 2024
Apr 09, 2025
India has emerged as the third-largest producer of electricity from wind and solar energy in 2024, overtaking Germany, according to the 2025 Global Electricity Review published by Ember. This milestone reflects India's accelerating clean energy momentum, with wind and solar accounting for 10% of India’s electricity mix and the country contributing significantly—10% of global wind and solar generation.
The report revealed that wind and solar made up 15% of global electricity in 2024, and low-carbon sources (including renewables and nuclear) provided 40.9% of the global electricity mix, marking a historic first since the 1940s. In India, clean energy sources constituted 22% of the mix, led by hydropower (8%), solar (7%), and wind (3%).
India witnessed a record addition of 24 GW of solar capacity in 2024, more than double that of 2023. This catapulted the nation to become the third-largest solar market globally, behind China and the US. The country also recorded the fourth-largest global increase in solar generation, adding 20 TWh in 2024 alone.
Globally, solar was the fastest-growing energy source for the 20th consecutive year, contributing 474 TWh in 2024—part of a record 858 TWh increase in clean electricity. Solar’s global share of electricity has now reached 6.9%, having doubled in just three years.
According to Ember’s Managing Director Phil MacDonald, “Solar power has become the engine of the global energy transition. Paired with battery storage, it is an unstoppable force.”
India continues to push toward its climate goals under the Paris Agreement, targeting 50% of installed capacity from non-fossil sources and 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The Ember report underscores Asia’s leadership in clean energy, driven by strong growth in solar and a focus on energy security and economic resilience.
