India Focuses on Grid Stability Amid Rising Renewable Energy Share
Sept 04, 2025
India is intensifying efforts to strengthen weather prediction systems to ensure a reliable grid as renewable penetration grows. On 15 June, electricity withdrawal from the national transmission network exceeded capacity, prompting the Grid Controller of India to urge generators and discoms to adjust operations. Similar alerts have been issued earlier to prevent instability caused by cloud cover or high solar generation. Experts recall the 2012 grid collapse that affected over 620 million people, though major incidents have declined with modernization and a unified grid.
India has now become the third-largest solar power generator, recently adding 22 GW of solar and wind capacity in June alone, with annual additions projected at 39–43 GW. The government has 186.3 GW under implementation and 67.08 GW tendered, placing it firmly on track to exceed its 500 GW renewable capacity target by 2030. Dispatchable sources like hydro and thermal power are being used to balance fluctuations from solar and wind.
A PwC report highlights that India’s 500 GW non-fossil goal and 61 GW/336 GWh storage target are fueling M&A activity across renewables, storage, and EVs. With favorable module prices and strong demand outlook, experts expect renewable additions to maintain a robust pace.
