India-Germany Green Hydrogen Roadmap: Advancing a Global Hydrogen Economy

Feb 18, 2025

India and Germany have unveiled the Indo-German Green Hydrogen Roadmap, a strategic collaboration aimed at accelerating the global green hydrogen economy. This partnership combines India’s vast renewable energy potential with Germany’s technological expertise, fostering innovation, trade, and large-scale deployment of green hydrogen.

Key Focus Areas

1. Investment in Green Hydrogen & Derivatives
  • Targeting hard-to-abate industries (steel, refineries, fertilizers), transport (shipping, aviation, heavy-duty trucking), and power applications.
  • Developing regional hydrogen hubs and export-oriented green hydrogen production in India, including green ammonia terminals for exports to Germany.
2. Facilitating Global Green Hydrogen Trade
  • Strengthening bilateral offtake agreements and promoting hydrogen trading platforms.
  • Exploring government-backed auctions, such as H2Global and the EU Green Hydrogen Bank, to ensure a structured market.
3. Joint Research & Development Initiatives
  • Advancing hydrogen storage, transportation, and integrated applications.
  • Encouraging collaboration between research institutions and industries through targeted funding programs.
4. Standardization & Certification
  • Establishing mutually recognized regulations, safety standards, and certification schemes to ensure sustainable hydrogen trade.
5. Workforce Development & Training
  • Launching specialized training programs for installers, developers, and policymakers to strengthen the green hydrogen workforce.
Benefits of the Collaboration
  • Accelerated Hydrogen Deployment – Driving technological advancements and scaling production.
  • Energy Security – Reducing dependence on fossil fuels and diversifying energy sources.
  • Economic Growth – Creating green jobs and investment opportunities.
  • Climate Action – Supporting global decarbonization efforts.
  • Stronger Bilateral Trade – Boosting Indo-German cooperation in the renewable energy sector.

This roadmap strengthens India's position as a green hydrogen export hub while enabling Germany to meet its clean energy targets, paving the way for a sustainable global hydrogen economy.
