India Launches Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme to Promote Clean Energy Market
Apr 30, 2025
India has officially launched the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme (GHCS) to promote the production and adoption of green hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources. The initiative aims to accelerate decarbonization and establish a transparent, reliable market for green hydrogen in the country.
Under the GHCS, producers must undergo a stringent certification process to verify that their hydrogen is produced using renewable energy with emissions below a prescribed threshold. Certification will be conducted by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)-accredited Carbon Verification Agencies (ACVAs), ensuring adherence to emission standards and providing confidence in the green credentials of the hydrogen produced.
The scheme introduces detailed standards and guidelines for Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) and outlines an official methodology for calculating emissions during production. This ensures transparency across the entire supply chain, allowing producers to build investor confidence and qualify for carbon credits under verified clean energy mechanisms.
The GHCS is expected to stimulate market development by creating a trustworthy, transparent certification framework that encourages industrial and commercial adoption of green hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based fuels.
