India's Largest Agrivoltaic Plant Under PM-KUSUM-A Built by IITian-Led Khare Energy
Apr 14, 2025
A groundbreaking milestone in India’s renewable energy and agricultural sectors has been achieved by Khare Energy Pvt Ltd with the commissioning of the country’s largest agrivoltaic plant under the PM-KUSUM-A scheme. Spearheaded by an IITian, the ambitious project is located in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, and spans 16 acres of dual-use farmland. This innovative development combines elevated solar panels with the cultivation of over 13 food crops, including high-value produce such as broccoli and strawberries. Designed for maximum efficiency and sustainability, the plant integrates drip irrigation, on-site food processing, and smart sensors to monitor both crop and energy outputs.
The agrivoltaic model not only produces clean energy but also supports food production, thereby doubling farmers' incomes through energy generation and agriculture. The site has become a beacon of innovation, serving as a live demonstration hub for policymakers, scientists, and agri-tech innovators. Garnering national media attention and praise from the scientific community, the project underscores Khare Energy’s leadership in promoting food-energy-water security in rural India. This marks their second large-scale agrivoltaic venture in Madhya Pradesh, highlighting the transformative potential of agrivoltaics in advancing sustainable development, clean energy, and rural empowerment.
